John Forbes Nash

John Nash sat down with journalist Marika Griehse in September 2004 to conduct an interview for The Nobel Foundation, which earlier in the year awarded him the Nobel Prize for Economics for his work on game theory. Nash, the subject of the biography and film “A Beautiful Mind,” explained his work and its relevance in the modern economy.

Asked to give advice to aspiring economists, Nash said, “There are a lot of trends in economics; what seems fashionable now and the general opinion might be quite different after 20 years or so. If somebody is starting a career, they should be prepared for changes. I think they should learn things that are good foundations, but don’t necessarily depend on a current fashion or what can be considered general opinion or popular opinion. They should maybe try to learn things that would be good for all time—of unquestionable scientific value.”
